In class this week we have been busy exploring the ‘Supervalu’ Cooking all stars kit.
We walked to our local shop and followed our shopping lists to local the ingredients we needed. We checked off the items as we found them – we used the ‘in store’ signs to help. We queued up at the till and exchanged money to buy the ingredients. In class teacher set up ‘stations’. We followed the visual instructions and used Lamh to communicate as we worked together step by step to make very tasty scrambled eggs. It is so good to try new foods and develop life skills. Parents were invited to try out our recipe at home for homework and send in photos.

We have been looking after the school ‘Geranium’ plants.
We worked outside in the Horticulture area and filled pots with new compost. Then we carefully transferred the old Geraniums into their new pots making sure the roots are well covered with soil. Next we worked inside to care for the individual plants. We dead headed each plant – carefully looking at, identifying and removing the dead leaves and flowers. Each plant got plenty of water. We all worked together to help clean up the junior hall. Once again we have enjoyed using our Supervalu ‘cooking all stars’ kit in class to cook a healthy snack.
We followed teacher’s visual guidelines to select the equipment and ingredients we needed. We worked in pairs following the step by step visual methodology -- Grating cheese, chopping ham, spreading butter, sprinkling ingredients, transferring tortilla using spatula, using hot plate and flipping our quesadilla. Best of all, we worked so well together, taking turns, cooking, tasting new foods, listening to Mexican music, helping with the clean up, having fun and building friendships. Everyone took a sample Quesadilla home --- Quess what next weeks home work will be?? Last Friday we enjoyed eating the most wonderful Christmas dinner. The tables were all decorated with table clothes, napkins and crackers, while festive music played in the background. It was lovely to all sit together and enjoy such a tasty meal. Thanks to Martin and the guys for a wonderful experience. We had a lovely festive time at Home Economics this week as we made mince pies. We took it turns to roll out the pastry, then we gently pressed out the circle shapes and placed onto bun trays. Students carefully measured a spoonful of mince meat mix and placed onto the pastry. Little star shapes were cut out and placed on top. Everyone really enjoyed brushing the mince pies with a milk glaze. Everyone took some pies home for their families and we also brought a tray full up to the senior hall and shared among the other classes at the Christmas Quiz. In Horticulture we have been working on transforming the ‘gurds’ grown in Horticulture and harvested in Autumn. We worked together to paint and decorate them. We recycled lost / odd socks to make the scarves and hats. We found a very special one that looked just like a penguin. These snowmen were sold at Dalkey’s pop up shop and the money donated to charity. |
