Students in Blasket have been working on an Apple project. We went on a trip to the country side and picked apples from a tree. We then used these apples to make a lovely tree display by printing directly from apples to paper – we all practiced our signs for the colours ‘red, green and yellow’ – the colours we observed on the apples.

Blasket are very lucky and have been enjoying weekly Yoga classes. As you can see from these photos the student’s are really enjoying this activity. The sessions are so relaxing and the student’s are totally engaged in the exercises, it is a very peaceful experience. Our instructor Mary is so calm and motivating. Also going to yoga allows students to practice their everyday life skills of undressing, dressing, washing /drying clothes and hanging them up in our wardrobe. We really enjoy Mondays. Each week Blasket enjoy exploring and using money in our school Snack Shack. We get to look at real coins and select the one we need. We practice our social skills by waiting our turn, greeting the shopkeeper, telling them what we’d like to eat (using Lámh or speech), exchanging goods for money and saying thank you. We are glad Dalkey students bring the shop round to our class. This week Blasket started Horticulture. It’s a long old journey down but totally worth it. We got to work the soil and break down any lumps with our hands. Then we filled the pots nearly to the top. We pushed our fingers down into the soil to make 3 holes per pot. Next we popped one little bean seed into each hole. We will water them over the coming weeks and can’t wait to watch them grow. This week Blasket worked to help the wider school community. Blasket and the junior classes were given ‘sacred space boxes’. We travelled to St. Brigid’s shrine to fill the Holy water bottles, we then went round to each class and returned the filled bottles. We also set up our own ‘sacred space’ in the senior hall. We will keep this space up to date as the year unfolds. This week Blasket are finding out all about apples and where they come from. We headed out to the countryside and picked some apples straight from an apple tree.
We tasted the apples we picked but found they were very sour. Next week we will make an apple tart with these apples. We had a surprise visit from two of the cutest baby chicks ever. We all chose different names for them from Fluffy and Chicky, to Nuggets!
Students enjoyed showing them around the other senior classes. We didn’t forget our class goldfish and were all very careful to feed them just a little bit. We are all excited about the adventures we will have next week. Over the last two weeks, students in Blasket have been practicing making either toasties or jelly in Home Economics. We are all getting very good at this skill and were invited to ‘show off’ our skills at home. We were very proud to carry them up to the senior hall and eat them at lunch time. We have had a busy exciting few days this week. We travelled up to IKEA in Dublin and bought some furniture. It was a wonderful trip. We spent the last few days following the instructions, wondering about all the extra pieces, the odd bumped finger, making up our bed, wardrobe and dresser. We will use these to practice our life skills during the coming months. This morning Blasket went down to the pet shop and we bought three goldfish.
We enjoyed looking in all the tanks and finally settled on our three favourites. We are naming them ‘Dory, Nemo and Finger’. We will be very careful and only feed them a tiny bit. We will invite the other classes to visit our new pets. |
