We all enjoyed a lovely little trip out to O’Neill’s flowers to pick a pumpkin or two.
There were so many to choose from – big ones, small ones, round ones, wonky ones, green ones or orange ones - finally we settled on our two favourite ones.
We will return in a few weeks to carve the pumpkins ready for Halloween.
While there we noticed some beautiful plants and flowers and even played a little game of peek a boo with a beautiful wild pheasant.
We had a little chat with the chickens as well.
This week Sherkin explored ‘sound beams’ - a touch-free device which uses sensor technology to translate body movement into music and sound.
We used these sessions, purely to explore the sounds created and the movements needed.
Hopefully we will work together over the next few weeks to produce a creative piece for our Halloween assembly. Watch this space !!!
Oct 4th was National tree day, Sherkin had the honour of planting 2 new saplings. This year we were gifted ‘Guelder rose saplings - The Guelder Rose, known as Viburnum opulus in Latin, has its own Irish name – Caorchon – which tells us that it is a native Irish Tree and thus supports a great deal of biodiversity of invertebrate life.
Today we headed out to the schools ‘Biodiversity Garden’, Students from last years Blasket paused and enjoyed seeing how well our Oak tree is doing from last year.
Then Sherkin students all got stuck in and helped each other plant our new saplings. We dug holes, transplanted the sapling, covered over with soil and watered. We were joined by a lovely little ladybird (proof that the garden really is attracting insects) Tomorrow we will mulch to help protect them from the winter cold.
We are all very proud of the pupils in Sherkin especially. those who took part in horse riding this week for the first time. Fears were conquered and praise pilled on. This really has been a great experience for all the students.
This week in home economics we made ourselves a little snack – who doesn’t enjoy a jam sandwich.
We worked together to find the equipment we needed and then we set the table.
We watched a demonstration by teacher then every student buttered their bread, spread the jam, cut their sandwiches, enjoyed eating them or wrapped them up to take home to daddy. Everyone worked together to help wash up and tidy the Home economics room.
What will we make next week ??
Several times during the week we get to work and enjoy using the soft play room. It’s a wonderful chance to let off a little steam while also working our vestibular systems, muscles and co ordination skills.
It’s a good physical workout for both the adults and students, sometimes we just need a rest for a few minutes.
We really enjoy our time in the horticulture area. This week we transplanted Geraniums. We half filled the pots with new compost then selected a Geranium plant and re potted it. We filled in the pots with more soil and carried them outside. We filled our watering cans and watered the plants. Then we all helped to tidy up.
Welcome to Blasket!
Our teacher is Mrs Majella Harris.
